Chapter 11

When I first heard the location of the petrol station, I hadn’t put two and two together, but it wasn’t until we arrived that it became clear. The garage was located just at the bottom of the road from the park that we had investigated the day before. I didn’t know when he’d served this man, but it was an interesting coincidence.

The clouds had opened as we drove to the garage, and droplets of rain began to splatter over my windscreen. I knew Scottish weather well enough to know that it wouldn’t be long before it began to pour, and that would only add to my foul mood.

As we arrived, I parked up beside one of the petrol pumps, locked the car, and then headed inside. We were the only customers in the shop, which made our jobs easier. There was nothing worse than trying to ask questions and then having to pause every two minutes for the employee to charge another customer for their fuel and a bottle of juice.

A bell above the door chimed as we went in, and shortly after it rang, a man came through from the area in the back. The man in question was fairly tall, with an average build, and with dark hair that had been slicked away from his face. I couldn’t tell his age, but he looked younger than me. Perhaps late twenties?

“Bruce Russell?” I asked as I neared the counter.

“That’s me,” the man nodded.

Emma and I held out our badges for him to inspect.

“My name is DCI Murray Fletcher, and this is Sergeant Emma Burns. We heard that you phoned in earlier about the suspect sketch?” I clarified.

Bruce’s blue eyes widened when he realised why we were there. I couldn’t work out why he was confused at first, seeing as he had been the one to phone our hotline, but I suppose everyone reacts in different ways.

“Yeah,” he nodded. “I saw the picture this morning, and I recognised the guy.”

“Do you remember what day you saw him?” I asked.

“Oh, it was only yesterday,” Bruce replied.

The coincidences only seemed to get stronger and stronger. What were the chances that Bruce had served someone who looked like our suspect, in the same area where the suspect had been located? Unless Bruce had served someone who looked completely different, I had a strong feeling that the customer and the caller were the same person.

“Do you have footage from when you served him?” I asked.

“Sure, um,” Bruce paused to look outside where someone had just pulled up next to a pump. “Let me get someone to cover, and then I’ll show you.”

“Take your time,” I smiled.

A beeping came from behind the counter as the new customer waited for their fuel to be dispensed. Bruce pressed a button to stop the beeping and then returned to the back area where he’d previously come from.

The time it took for Bruce to find the cover he needed gave me some extra time to think. I couldn’t
